In 1997, Thailand faced the Asian Financial Crash, colloquially known as the Tom Yum disease. The Makhampom Theatre Group was affected as funding dried up almost immediately. However, due to some fortuitous timing, the Australian Embassy had a larger pool of funds as a result of the tumbling Thai Baht, and directed a 'sustainability grant' towards a first Study Tour program in 1999.
20 years later, 20 Study Tours and over 250 participants later, the final Study Tour will be held in 2020. What is most interesting about this project, however, is how integral it became in Makhampom's renewal as one of Thailand's and Asia's most active and influential theatre groups.
